The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), opened in Fustat (Old Cairo) in 2017, is the first museum dedicated to the entirety of Egyptian civilization, from prehistory to the present day. Built by Sultan Salah ad‑Din (Saladin) between 1176 and 1183 to protect Cairo from Crusader attacks, the Citadel served as Egypt’s seat of government for 700 years. Today, it houses several mosques, museums, and offers one of the best panoramic views of Cairo. The centerpiece is the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali (completed 1848), an Ottoman‑style mosque built in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali’s son. Its alabaster‑clad walls, majestic central dome, twin 82‑metre minarets, and the beautiful courtyard with ablution fountain are spectacular. The mosque’s interior features a huge brass chandelier and is decorated in red and gold. The Citadel also provides excellent photo opportunities of the city and, on clear days, the Pyramids of Giza.

Coptic Cairo clusters inside the ancient Roman fortress of Babylon. This area is one of the world’s oldest Christian enclaves and a pilgrimage destination for Christians worldwide. You will visit:
- Hanging Church (El Muallaqa) – built above the Roman Gatehouse, its nave is suspended over the ancient fortress. It features exquisite ebony and ivory iconostasis and a ceiling shaped like Noah’s Ark.
- Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus (Abu Serga) – a 4th‑century basilica built over a cave where the Holy Family (Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus) rested during their flight into Egypt. It is one of the holiest sites in Egypt.
- Ben Ezra Synagogue – originally a Christian church, converted to a synagogue in the 9th century. It is famous for the Cairo Geniza, a cache of nearly 200,000 Jewish manuscripts discovered in the 19th century.
