🏛️ About Giza, Saqqara & Memphis – The Pyramids’ Story

This tour covers the three most important archaeological sites related to the evolution of pyramid building in ancient Egypt. Giza represents the peak of pyramid construction during the 4th Dynasty (c. 2580‑2560 BC), with the Great Pyramid being the largest ever built. Saqqara, the necropolis of Memphis, contains the Step Pyramid of Djoser (c. 2670 BC), designed by the architect Imhotep – the world’s first pyramid and the earliest colossal stone building in history. Memphis itself was the first capital of a unified Egypt, founded by Pharaoh Menes around 3100 BC. Its open‑air museum houses some of the finest monumental statues from the Old Kingdom, including a 10‑metre alabaster sphinx and a fallen colossus of Ramses II. Together, these sites illustrate the birth, evolution, and zenith of ancient Egyptian architectural genius.

📅 Detailed Itinerary – A Full Day of Ancient Wonders

8:00‑8:30 AM – Hotel Pickup
Your private Egyptologist guide and driver will pick you up from your Cairo or Giza hotel in an air‑conditioned vehicle. Begin your journey to the Giza Plateau (approx. 30 minutes).
Giza Plateau – The Three Pyramids & Sphinx
Arrive at the Giza Plateau, home to the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure. Your guide will explain the construction, symbolism, and mysteries of these ancient tombs. Walk around the base of the Great Pyramid, then head to the panoramic viewpoint where all three pyramids align. (Optional: purchase an extra ticket to enter the interior of the Great Pyramid – subject to availability.) After the pyramids, visit the Great Sphinx – the legendary lion‑bodied statue with the face of Pharaoh Khafre – and the adjacent Valley Temple, where mummification rituals took place.
Optional Camel Ride (extra, payable locally)
For a classic desert experience, you can take a short camel ride around the pyramids (approx. $10‑15). Negotiate with local handlers or ask your guide for assistance.
Drive to Saqqara – Step Pyramid of Djoser
After Giza, drive 30 minutes south to Saqqara, the vast necropolis of Memphis. Here you'll visit the Step Pyramid of Djoser, designed by the brilliant architect Imhotep. This 60‑metre tall structure is the earliest colossal stone building in history, marking the transition from simple mastaba tombs to true pyramids. Explore the surrounding funerary complex – the Heb‑Sed court, the serdab (housing the statue of Djoser), and the entrance colonnade.
Lunch at a Quality Local Restaurant
After Saqqara, you'll be taken to a well‑rated restaurant offering authentic Egyptian cuisine (grilled chicken, kofta, rice, salads, and dips). Vegetarian options are available on request. Lunch is included in the tour price (drinks not included).
Memphis Open‑Air Museum – Ancient Capital
Continue to Memphis (Mit Rahina), the first capital of unified Egypt. The open‑air museum displays monumental artifacts rescued from the ancient city. The highlight is the fallen colossal limestone statue of Ramses II (over 10 metres long) lying in a purpose‑built hall. You'll also see the beautiful alabaster Sphinx of Memphis, carved from a single block of alabaster, and other statues of gods and pharaohs.
Return to Hotel
After Memphis, your driver will transfer you back to your hotel, arriving around 5:00‑6:00 PM, concluding a deep dive into ancient Egypt’s most important pyramid sites.
Insider Tips: Wear comfortable shoes – you’ll be walking on sandy and uneven surfaces. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses (the Giza Plateau has little shade). For the best photos at Giza, morning light is ideal. The interior of the Great Pyramid is not recommended for claustrophobic people. Camel rides at Giza – agree on price before mounting. Bring small denominations of Egyptian pounds for bathroom fees and small bazaar purchases.
